What we did
We were engaged by the Australian Department of Health to provide secretariat and scientific services in support of the per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) Expert Health Panel (the Panel). The Panel was established in response to PFAS used in fire-fighting foams being detected in the ground water of areas adjoining Defence bases.
How we did it
We provided secretariat and meeting management services for the Panel as they worked to advise the Australian Government on the potential health impacts associated with PFAS exposure and identify priority areas for further research.
An initial collation of relevant documentation was also provided to the Panel for their consideration, including systematic reviews and international government guidance. A more detailed literature review was subsequently provided. We also supported the Panel to consider the views of the public and other stakeholders through a public consultation process, and analysis of written public submissions.
Benefits for the client
We supported the Panel’s drafting of the final report, which was submitted to the Minister for Health. The final report included recommendations and advice to the Government and the National Health and Medical Research Council. The report has been published on the Department’s website; https://www1.health.gov.au/internet/main/publishing.nsf/Content/ohp-pfas-expert-panel.htm.
