Evaluating the Indigenous Australians’ Health Programme

What we’re doing

We are leading an evaluation of the effectiveness of the Australian Government’s investment in primary health care (PHC) for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people through the Indigenous Australians’ Health Program (IAHP), for the Australian Department of Health.

How we’re doing it

The evaluation was co-designed with the Department and a health sector evaluation co-design group. The co-design process also involved engaging with a wider group of stakeholders, including community people and groups, state/territory governments, peak bodies in the Aboriginal community-controlled health sector, Primary Health Networks, health workforce bodies and data custodians. The evaluation design has adopted a place-based approach to enable an in-depth, systems analysis of the impact of IAHP and improvements needed at national, regional and local levels. The evaluation involves partnering with a mix of various remote, rural, regional and urban sites across Australia.

Following a co-design process, we are implementing the evaluation over 2019 to 2023.
