Pounamu is a cultural researcher with experience in in-depth interviewing, archival research and critical analysis. He has a strong sense of cultural awareness and is comfortable liaising with diverse stakeholders, having conducted extensive ethnographic fieldwork amongst Māori communities (including his whānau).

Raised by strong Māori women, he is passionate about addressing structural disadvantage for Māori and Pasifika peoples, and has developed an extensive repertoire of qualitative research methods including ethnographic and participant observation. Pounamu is a confident orator and has lectured and tutored in Māori Studies, Pacific Studies, and Pacific Anthropology at the University of Otago, and Pacific Studies at Victoria University of Wellington.
